M4 junctions 18 to 19 weekend closure for bridge replacement scheme
National Highways is closing the M4 north of Bristol for a full weekend in March as part of the work on the A432 Badminton Road Bridge.
The M4 will be closed in both directions between junctions 18 and 19 from 7pm Friday 21 March to 6am Monday 24 March so the bridge can be demolished.
With 3,000 to 4,000 vehicles using this section of the M4 every hour over peak weekend periods the closure is likely to cause substantial disruption, and drivers are advised, where possible, to avoid the area and plan journeys for alternative times. A local diversion route will be in place via the A46, A420, A4174 and the M32 and is expected to be very busy.
Please follow diversion signs and not satnavs.
In preparation of the demolition work the A432 Badminton Road bridge will close to pedestrians and cyclists from Friday 7 March. An alternative route will be available via Down Road, Bury Hill and Church Lane. Work on the bridge is due to complete in early 2026. For safety there will be an exclusion zone in place around the bridge during the demolition work and we ask that members of the public do not try to access the work site. Given the location of the work and its proximity to the A4174 Ring Road, which is part of the official diversion route and is expected to be busy, there will be very few places where members of the public can safely view the work taking place.
